Ethical Frameworks in Wales and England
One Voice Wales and the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC) held an important event recently to explore key developments, challenges, and best practice in maintaining high standards in local governance.
The importance of high ethical standards in Wales had been highlighted in recent studies such as the Senedd Inquiry into the role, governance and accountability of the community and town council sector.
In his opening remarks, the Chief Executive of One Voice Wales, Lyn Cadwallader, described the ethical framework in Wales and looked forward to sharing experiences with others.
Speakers included representatives of the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales, Monitoring Officers, Welsh Government and One Voice Wales.
Delegates contemplated the impact of poor ethical behaviour on democracy, emotional resilience, and civility & respect. Colleagues also discussed ways of tackling bullying and harassment.
Other issues raised included the growth in Social Media, the impact of newly elected Councillors and options to develop mandatory training.
The online event affirmed the duty of all parties to uphold high ethical standards and show respect for each other.
